Determine the funicular shape for a structure that carries a uniform load of ‘w’ across
its entire span and a concentrated load of ‘P’ at midspan. Sketch the probable shape
of the structure first and then determine appropriate algeberic expressions that
       precisely define the shape?

[...] Engineers are often (justifiably) stereotyped as asking ‘what is the right tool?’ but never ‘why build?’ And, indeed, the pure technical challenges of space travel excite me no end. My dream job would be Martian Structural Engineer — I want to design me some domes (or paraboloids).
True, True! And thank you for pointing that out. Of course, the downside to tension domes is that the most easily available materials off world is soil and rock, which needs to be used (as masonry or concrete) in compression.

But inflatable domes could (and I would venture will) be shipped with explorers to be used until larger, more permanent habitats are built. So yes; there will be a place for domes.

Of course that only applied to compression domes, as you note. No reason why you can't have an inverted suspension bridge. Stll the necessity for constant hatitation pressure, but at leaste we can have a dome.
